According to PM News Nigeria, Nigeria has been rated by the World Culture Score Index as one of the countries in the world with the lowest reading culture.
For a country in which its citizens have consistently complained that a majority of its leaders are poorly educated, this should be a cause of concern as its unlikely that we will have any stronger leaders in the future without a strong reading culture among our children and youths in our nation today. Just like the popular saying goes that readers are leaders.
This among others is the reason why some determined individuals, groups and organizations are actively taking steps towards changing the narrative.
In this story, we talk about a young African girl Favour Chimuanya James has decided to rewrite the story of her community by significantly improving its Reading culture.

“There is a burning desire in me to see a reading society. A society whose pursuance should be knowledge. To achieve this, I cultivate, instill and promote value for books and appreciation of its content to lighten the minds of the third world nations’ children and young adults.”- Favour James

Having taken cognizance of her community where materialism and hedonism
is becoming the order of the day for the teaming youths. Sport bet centres,
bars, night club and all sorts of entertainment is almost taking over or out shadowing the things
of value like library and books related activities
which build virtue and right values in a society. And in order to withstand this hydra headed monster from eating into the veins of the young ones ( the
upcoming generation), The Project "Kindle" was born.
“We are refined by Knowledge and that is the Real Education.”- Favour James.
In order tackle this injustice in her community, she joined force with Garden City Library Project Read Advocacy and Inner City Child Project and began book awareness and book reading campaign in the communities.
“I
want to change the attitude of people especially our young ones, towards
knowledge in my community. I want to create for the upcoming generation, a
foundation that is curiosity-based. I want to work on reviving our reading
culture here in the inner city. To make our children readers so they could
become good leaders tomorrow. I want to create a support system for book
lovers/book worms in my environment. I want to KINDLE a burning desire for
knowledge in my community.”_ Favour James
THE
JOURNEY BEGAN
With
her team, they visited five communities’ heads and got good response from
three. Toured ten schools in the community. Letters were dispatched to them.
They began to educate them on the need for reading and imbibing the culture of reading among our young ones. The need for
reading hour in the school’s table and possibly have a reading
teacher. And the need to have library in the school and visitlibraries.and lastly the need to create literary activities
to stir the minds of the young ones to
pursue knowledge like never before.
Campaigns were staged at the strategic areas
in the communities. Questions and answers were raised by the people who could
not put the puzzles together on why people should read.
She and her team took the bull by the horn and
commenced a reading program among the
schools who accepted our initiative. Some parents made a resolution to join the movement.
Books were made available through support of Garden City Library Project Read Advocacy.
