In this interview with Attain, Miracle Ewim, Founder of We Lead Africa shares her vision to impact society through charity.
1. Please kindly tell us about yourself?
My name is Miracle Ewim, a graduate of Microbiology from Anambra State University, a fast rising Youth leader, personal development expert, Amazon bestselling Author of two books and a Humanitarian who is passionate about using volunteering as a tool to promote Sustainable Developmental Goals.
I am currently the founder of We Lead Africa, a community that is geared towards raising global African leaders across all sectors and the convener of Love Showers, an initiative that seeks to make impact in the society through charity and is actively promoting SDG 2 and 4.
In my spare time, I love to listen to audio books, engage in conversations on social media and spend quality time with mentors.
2. Tell us about your Non-profit Organization?
We Lead Africa is a non-profit driven by a group of passionate and enthusiastic young Africans.
There is a narrative about Africa born from a single sided story that positions Africa as a place of disadvantage globally. Having a full understanding that Africa is a continent full of untapped unique potentials, our goal is to change the narrative by raising global leaders in the professional (chosen career path), digital and business sectors.
One of our core approach is charity. This we do through an umbrella tagged Love Showers (Instagram.com/@loveshowers) where we organize bi annual events promoting the SDGs.
In February this year, we launched Project FEED 500. Through this outreach, we were able to put smiles on the faces of 500 needy persons in Lagos in 5 different communities (100 each) with the help of my team of 100 volunteers providing feeding hampers and health education for the recipients.
We also addressed the issue of dropping out from school as this became a rising issue and young students considered the university education a scam. This we did through a campaign tagged #SchoolNoBeScam where we utilized both social media and offline platforms. Starting from Facebook to Instagram and finally to twitter a massive awareness was raised to encourage students to complete their tertiary education. This campaign caused a trend on the Nigerian twitter on the 19th of March, 2019 which trended for over nine hours with a reach of 540 thousand persons. Beyond the social media, we also raised awareness in 5 universities in Nigeria and 5 secondary schools in Lagos, 1 in Ogun state, Nigeria.
We are currently championing a #SkillFiesta where we would empower 100 youths with digital skills for free amongst many other things we do.
3. What brought about your Non-profit and when did it start?
We Lead Africa began by a single passion to create a platform where young Africans can converge, their skills sharpened and in the long run become global voices. I am also very big on volunteering and personal development and these are the major areas we cover as a team.
I believe strongly that the change we seek is absolutely possible if we raise a generation of individuals who understand where they are headed, are equipped with skills to that effect, understand the art of service and are ready to give their all towards achieving a better society through charity.
4. What were the main challenges you faced early on when you started this Vision and how did you overcome them?
One of the greatest challenge I faced was getting purpose driven individuals to key into my vision. A lot of persons showed interest but when it was time to work, many of them fizzled out, This made me understand that it takes more than interest to keep a vision going, you need people with a strong will power, who understands the vision and mission of the organization and would be committed to stay through to ensure a lasting legacy and this I have found in my current team of 100 volunteers.
5. What is the biggest challenge you ever faced since you started?
The major challenge for me would be raising funds for our projects to ensure sustainability. Thankfully, my team of volunteers are ever ready to crowd fund events and we are currently seeking ways to apply for sponsorships and grants.
6. What do you consider success in your Non-profit?
In my opinion, success would be the tangible impact of our individual projects on the recipients and the volunteers.
In one of our events, project feed 500 precisely, one of the recipients who happened to be a beggar on the street came to me in tears of joy thanking us for the initiative as he has had no hope for food in weeks and lots more from other projects.
Our volunteers have also found purpose for living in their individual places of interest as the team acts as a support system for individual growth and are excited at the stance of any project, this indeed is really overwhelming.
7. At what point did you begin to achieve success in your pursuit of your Vision and how did it happen?
The incomparable feeling of success for me began when I could seat back and my team would pull any project. They are totally sold into the vision.
I had seen people who came in as shy and naïve rise into becoming team leaders and project coordinators. Personally my leadership skill greatly increased and with the force we generate now, we are not afraid to take on any project and this in my opinion is success.
8. What would you consider your greatest achievement ever since you started?
My greatest achievement is the innumerable number of persons that send me messages of how inspired they are by my work. This is a legacy I intend to keep up with, to inspire a generation of selfless individuals through practical leadership.
9. Who has inspired you the most as a Non-profit founder?
My greatest inspiration would be my Father in Heaven for blessing me with over flowing streams of ideas and the will power to push, then my parents, the most supportive people ever. My mentors and models also form the back bone of my career, my story is incomplete without them.
10. If you could go back in time, what are the changes you would have made for your Non-profit?
Nothing, absolutely nothing. Through it all I have learnt and is still learning and just like this popular saying by Lyndon Johnson; Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.
I choose to win my tomorrow by learning from my yesterday.
11. What else should we see you doing in the Future?
I am one who is passionate about the educational sector, I am an ardent advocate for quality education in all levels be it formal or informal with a massive soft spot for the female child.
I believe that in other to achieve the Africa we all desire, we must be willing to inculcate sound and relevant education to the younger generation.
As a long term plan, I hope to work with the United Nations in advocating for sound education for Africans and also engage in many more projects to gain experience and sharpen my skill set towards a better society.
12. Aside your Non-Profit, what are your other interests?
My other interests vary from tech which is something I am currently building on to public speaking.
I am one you could call multi – talented, therefore I am very open to evolution.
13. Your favourite book, song and food?
My favourite book would be Becoming by Michelle Obama
Song? Hmmmmmmm, I am a huge fan of Whitney Houston
Food? The Nigerian Jollof all the way.
14. What's the most important lesson you have learnt since you started your Non-profit?
Hard work is not a way, it is the only way. Nothing good comes easy. You could see all the glamour in other people’s lives but behind the scenes, these people are working endlessly. One thing I have consciously chosen to do is to always ask how did you do it?
Cultivating a learning attitude draws you a step closer every time to another level.
