Meet Mayowa John Ajibodu, the amazing Founder of Shun Unemployment Foundation

In an Interview with Attain, Mayowa John Ajibodu, Founder Shun Unemployment Foundation shared his vision to significantly reduce unemployment in Nigeria. Read below...

Please kindly tell us about yourself?

I am Mayowa John Ajibodu, managing Director, Majaa Global Communications and founder, Shun unemployment foundation, a Non-governmental organization aimed at reducing the rate of Unemployment in Nigeria and Africa.

Tell us about your Non-profit Organization?

Shun unemployment Foundation is a Non-governmental, Non-profit organization aimed at helping youths and the unemployed discover their innate potentials, transforming them to social entrepreneurs and global business leaders and thereby reducing the mushroom growth of unemployment through our three integral modules – TRAIN, EMPOWER AND NURTURE

What brought about your Non-profit and when did it start?

The idea behind the NGO is God. Also, the need to solve a problem and help youth look beyond white collar employment is also a major drive behind the initiative.

What were the main challenges you faced early on when you started and how did you overcome them ?

Hmmm. Over the years we have come to realize that our challenges are actually a part of the process  to fruitful efforts. However, some of the challenges we encounter when we started was mainly on getting finance to reach more undergraduate on campuses and getting the youths themselves to be serious about the message Shun unemployment has come to preach.

What has been the biggest challenge you ever faced since you started?

Our biggest challenge recently would be getting more partners, institutions and stakeholders to support us in getting across to the unemployment across Nigeria. I’m sure you know that finance is also key because most of the people we train or talk to look up to us for start-up capital.

What do you consider success in your Non-profit?

Smile. Our greatest successes would be the countless feedbacks and smile we receive from those who have benefitted on our various platforms including those who now work and run their businesses successfully.

At what point did you begin to achieve success in pursuit of your Vision and how did it happen?

At what point? Well, that would be when we saw that some of the people who came through our platform now has what they do and as such, they no longer roam the street searching for white collar employment. The truth, the smile on those whom we’ve empowered keeps the vision alive.

What would you consider your greatest achievement ever since you started ?

Well my greatest achievement is the recent Unemployment-TEN centre which will be launched with the partnership of Lagos State Ministry of wealth Creation and Employment. It was a long time dream that came to reality.

Who has inspired you the most as a Non-profit founder?

That would be Tony Elumelu, the founder of TEF and Slum2school.

If you could go back in time, what are the changes you would have made for your Non-profit?

That would be not channeling the little resources available then into doing the right things. We were more concerned about the activities than the empowerment. Today, we are grateful that the vision is getting clearer each passing day.

Aside your Non-Profit, what are your other interests?

Aside Shun Unemployment Foundation? Well, I love business with special interest in media and marketing and of course, I LOVE TO PRAISE MY GOD and this I do through my yearly concert, THE ATMOSPHERE.

What's the most important lesson you have learnt from your Non-profit ?

That would be to listen to those who know the ā€œHOWā€ of every business.
