Stella Nwaekpe, Founder of Vertopia, shares with Attain her Vision to promote virtue and godliness through her non-profit brand; Vertopia.
Please kindly tell us about yourself?
I am Stella Nwaekpe, an ambitious lady who is also passionate about God and people. I am friendly, smart, very analytical, purpose driven. I have my first degree in Veterinary medicine. I'm now a Chartered HR professional and also rounding up my MBA in HR
Tell us about Vertopia?
Vertopia was coined from 2 words: Virtue and Perfection. It's first a ministry as our focus is to promote virtue and godliness via our write ups (Priceless magazine) and projects like the Beautopia Teen Girl Project.
When and what brought about the Vertopia Vision ?
It started in September 2015. I had actually been involved in charity projects unofficially since 2013 but I thought to put a system in place to make it sustainable over time. I'm also good with writing and I thought to use those writings as a way to generate funds too for charity projects that's why we registered as Vertopia.
What were the main challenges you faced early on when you started this Vision and how did you overcome them ?
Getting members as it was a non profit thing. It's really challenging getting committed individuals especially when they are not being paid. I prayerfully selected team members and one thing I looked out for was passion for humanity and God. Getting finance and support was a challenge as most people felt we were new in the business and it took a lot to convince them. We however started from our sphere of influence and kept reaching out to corporate sponsors despite several disappointments. We also faced some criticism especially with the magazine, some people said "Christian magazines don't sell and people might not be willing to place adverts in it", however we never compromised our standards and God has been faithful.
And what was the biggest challenge you ever faced since you started?
I really can't mention one specifically. We keep facing challenges but we're driven people and always find a way around it
What do you consider success in your Project/Non-profit?
Leaving a lasting impact in the hearts of the people we reach out to.
At what point did you begin to achieve success in pursuit of your Vision and how did it happen?
From day one. Success for me was about impact and I would say that each project or activity has achieved this. I celebrate every small win while I strive for the big ones.
I also try to follow every instruction and idea that God lays upon my heart and prayerfully act on it.
What would you consider your greatest achievement ever since you started ?
Priceless magazine launch and Beautopia Teen Girl Project which is fast becoming a brand
If you could go back in time, what are the changes you would have made for your Project/Non-profit?
I can't think of any. I sometimes feel I could have started earlier, but I've learnt that God prepares us for times and seasons. So honestly I probably wouldn't change a thing.
What else should we see you doing in the Future?
Making more impact as God directs and empowers me to.
Aside your Non-Profit, what are your other interests?
Music, HR, event management, writing, and public relations and I love pictures too
What's the most important lesson you have learnt since you started your Non-profit project?
I've learnt team work, patience and being selfless
