Femi Babbs Vision to Positively Impact Youths

In an interview with Attain, Femi Babatunde, Winner of the SME100 Award for Creative Writing shared his vision to positively impact the youths and help them make the most of their gifts and abilities.

Please kindly tell us about yourself?

My name is Banjo Oluwafemi Babatunde, commonly known as ‘Femi Babbs. I am a graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University where I studied Pharmacy. I am a pharmacist, writer, public speaker, author, young entrepreneur and learner. I’m just the guy next door … lol

Tell us about Scion Magazine?

Scion magazine is a youth based magazine that is focused on the general wellbeing and exposure of every youth out there. It comprises of sports, health, technology, art, innovation, creativity, photography, education, politics and so on. Every edition has a diverse attention and goal.

When and how was it birthed?

It was my fifth year in Pharmacy school, after handing over as the faculty president. I thought of starting a faculty writers club, but then; I wanted something beyond pharmacy school. I took time to think and make findings on things that could unite every student/youths out there and it was a MAGAZINE. Scion magazine started officially November 18, 2016, even though we (I and my team) had been working tirelessly and consulting people about three months before then. We released our first edition February 2nd, 2017 and our most recent edition was June 1st, 2018 (Fourth edition) and Scion magazine has been in existence for almost two years now.

What solutions/impact would your Magazine provide?

Scion magazine has been known for its wide range of impacts on creative youths, featuring young writers, upcoming music acts, models, young photographers and creating an atmosphere that takes them to the public. So far, this has been our goal and we are not stopping on every achievement. The nation is filled with so many raw and untapped talents; it’s our passion to help utilize them.

What are the main challenges you have faced so far in running Scion Magazine and how did you overcome them?

Every dream, passion and goal has its diverse challenges, especially when it’s just been started.  I could remember when we first started, I had discussed this idea with some people that could have been a co-founder of the great initiative today but they stylishly opted out because money was involved, they said “How many people read magazine this days” and the excuse of still being in school. We started the first edition with my personal savings; many people were not ready to feature, but that was the beginning of the success story we share today. From then till this moment, my family (the team) has been making it work such that I am so proud of them.

What is your major Goal for Scion Magazine at the Moment?

Scion Magazine has already become a household name within and beyond its niche, especially with the recent sme100Nigeria 25 under 25 national award on creativity and last year, we won the West African award for Student Brand of The Year.. My major goal is that we become actively recognized in all schools and institutions of the federation. Youths are key!

Where should we see Scion Magazine in 5 years time?

Lol… 5 years...hmn…  I am not a seer but it is certain Scion Magazine Ng has come to stay and would obviously be one of the top most recognized creativity brand in Africa.. We would have taken over Nigeria and West Africa already.

If you could go back in time, what are the changes you would have made in your journey?

Changes…… Well; it’s just one thing…. I’ll have worked more to revive my drawing skills, I lost it.

What else should we see you doing in the Future?

Ahahahahah…. This is the future already, I published my first book April this year, titled “Beyond the Grades”, I intend starting a huge retail pharmacy in few years to come, setting up a huge multi-spaced barbing salon and viewing Centre. Speaking at every reasonable function and dishing out the truth about every success one can wish for.

Do you have any Mentors/Role Models and what attracted you to them?

Yes, definitely; God is my mentor and Benjamin Carson is my mentor. Everything about God attracts me; especially the fullness of His glory. Benjamin Carson is one of the few people I can call determination and success story.

What is your biggest lesson so far as a Creative Writer?

I have been marked, judged and scored but every time; it was always a new dimension. My kind of writing is more of inspirational and audacity. As a young writer, I am mandated to read and always read great works so others can read mine too. It has taught me that there is so much to achieve.

Tell us about the Experience of Winning the SME100 Award for Creative Writing

Winning SME100 awards was a dream fulfilled, being recognized for what you love doing. It’s one of the best gifts any creative person could get. I am not stopping.
